The Design Platform, is made up of a series of distinct workshops and discussions highlighting centuries old traditional crafts reinterpreted by visionary Emirati artisans and contemporary artists, informal conversations by leading art personalities and a daily spoken-word performance by artist Hala Ali, which tookpart in Tadashi Kawamata’s installation Chairs for Abu Dhabi, created from over 200 chairs, exhibited by kamel mennour gallery as part of the Beyond section.

Other highlights included a workshop on developing distinct fonts using organic materials, led by Hadeyeh Badri and Hala Al Ani of Mobius Design Studio; interactive workshops on how to make and experiment with telle, a form of embroidery using twisted coloured thread, led by Emirati artisans and UAE based artist UBIK along with experimental workshops on the unique art of khoos (palm-frond weaving) led by Emirati artisans and designer Stuart Haygarth.

"Abu Dhabi Art's 2012 Design Platform sets out to highlight and distinguish an understanding of the innate aesthetics of the UAE through the study, exploration, experimentation and promotion of the roots of Emirati creativity - a design aesthetic based on transient states, freedom of movement, mobility, and constant change," says Rita Aoun-Abdo, Executive Director, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, the organisers of Abu Dhabi Art.

As a place for the whole family, Abu Dhabi Art welcomes children at the Art Zone – a specially designed art space for them and their families filled with multiple art activity stations and art-making easel areas. With their parents, or with the trained and professional staff, children can explore and engage in art concepts and art-making together. Art Zone is located within the main building of the fair and is free of charge.

Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority was created in February 2012 and took on the employees, assets, roles and responsibilities of the former Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage and Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, and included the Cultural Department of Tourism Development & Investment Company. The Authority’s objective is to conserve and promote the heritage and culture of Abu Dhabi and develop a world-class destination of distinction.

Abu Dhabi Art is organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority to further promote Abu Dhabi as a catalyst for art and culture – locally, regionally, and internationally. Galleries can exhibit under the following banners; Modern & Contemporary Galleries, Signature (one emerging artist per exhibitor) and Beyond. In addition, the Abu Dhabi Art organisers give one emerging gallery the opportunity to take part in Bidaya, which translated from Arabic means ‘beginning’.

Abu Dhabi Art creates the opportunity for gallerists, collectors, artists and art aficionados to meet, to acquire new artworks, share ideas and exchange information.

Providing a wide spectrum of the visual arts including painting, sculpture, drawing, installation and photography as well as video and digital art by more than 400 artists, Abu Dhabi Art showcases both renowned and emerging artists. Since its inception, the fair has also supported new artists gaining foothold into the market and has artwork appealing to different tastes and budgets.

Engaging with the community is an essential part of the Abu Dhabi Art platform and visitors can enrich their experience through the many public and education programmes that are an integral part of the platform’s offerings, including a dedicated Art Zone space for children.
