A arte Invernizzi will present at Art Basel 2017 an exhibition project entitled Dynamics of Space that creates a dialogue between seminal works of Rodolfo Aricò, Carlo Ciussi, François Morellet, Mario Nigro and Niele Toroni. It includes works made with different media dating from the 1950s onwards and illustrates the evolution of a creative idea of movement in space, expressed not in the form of physically moving objects but rather in that of a dynamic inherent in the image itself. Different generations use different visual languages to retrace this research, through key works that interact with each other in the exhibition.
The germinal heart of the exhibition is in the form of two paintings by Mario Nigro from 1950: Pannello a scacchi and Senza titolo, which feature optical-perceptive gratings that the artist moves both structurally and chromatically. Nigro’s works thus create a new space, with an all-over development that does not just remain on the surface, but rather penetrates in all the directions, including the depth of the painted space, in an investigation into possible relationships within the cosmos.
Three works by Rodolfo Aricò, of the ‘80s, forms the visual centre of the inner space of the project. The diverging fissures and pulsating chromatic germinations shatter the continuity of the structure.
The two large paintings called Senza titolo, 2005, by Carlo Ciussi, express a different dynamic of space, in the form of a sensory geometry: a geometry not based on Euclidean coordinates and canons, but rather on a powerful internalisation and an intimate acquisition of form. This appears as a possible image of the metamorphosis of a constantly evolving cosmic materiality.
Two works by François Morellet, Contresens n°1 and La fuite enchantée des Beaux-Arts n° 4, both of 2014, are perfect examples of his distinctive reinterpretation and deconstruction of geometry. In his works, essential, rigorous archetypes, such as the square, the angle and the circle, open up their borders in duplications, progressions and fragmentations, as well as through light, with the inclusion of neon. The artist does away with the image as a visual field closed in on itself, and brings the viewer into a complex space of experience.
On the walls of the entrance to the exhibition are two works by Niele Toroni, Impronte di pennello n. 50 a intervalli di 30 cm. Since 1967, the artist has been using a method that involves making a sequence of imprints with a no. 50 brush, 30 cm apart and over different surfaces, each of which becomes the place of a real transformation and a constant metamorphosis of his action over time. It is a dynamic of the concreteness of diversity, the possibilities of which are not exhausted in the uniqueness and individuality of the work, but rather in the continuous change of the possible outcomes of its empirical realisation and unfolding.
