De Buck Gallery is proud to present a solo booth by Devan Shimoyama, featuring all new paintings and the launch of a new print series. The 2 larger works that will be featured are part of a new series that Shimoyama is working on, titled The Reading List. The series consists of portrait paintings of black identifying individuals in their homes, reading a variety of texts that have been recommended to Shimoyama, or books that have been important or significant in some way. Many of these texts were formative or rooted in fiction/fantasy and were somewhat therapeutic for Shimoyama, allowing the escape to fully immerse in a new narrative. All of these texts relate to the understanding of his self, identity, history, visibility and inclusion.
