ZCA's exhibition includes works by three Printmaking Artists:
Orit Hofshi, one of Israel's most prominent and influential artists, alongside the two renowned American artists from differing eras, Alex Katz and Kaws.
New York painter Alex Katz (b. 1927, New York) developed his highly stylized aesthetic in reaction to 1950's Abstract Expressionism, finding his own distinctive resolution between formalism and representation. His brightly colored figurative and landscape paintings are rendered in a flat style that takes cues from an everyday visual culture like advertising and cinema, in many ways anticipating both the formal and conceptual concerns of Pop Art. Well known for his many portraits of his wife and muse, Ada, Katz has also dedicated himself to printmaking.
Brian Donnelly (b. 1974, New Jersey), known professionally as Kaws, is an American artist and designer. His work includes repeated use of a cast of figurative characters and motifs, some dating back to the beginning of his career in the 1990s, initially painted in 2D and later realized in 3D. Some of his characters are his own creations while others are reworked versions of existing icons. His prints have reached audiences all over the world and are some of his most sought after works, selling entire editions of 100 within minutes of their release.
Orit Hofshi (b.1959, Israel), who's work was recently been acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, creates monumental works depicting distant, neo-romantic landscapes. In her works, the forces of nature and destruction mingle and mix as she maintains an ongoing dialogue between the figures and their encircling settings. Hofshi's practice has for many years focused on printmaking, works on paper, installations, and woodcutting as her primary mediator. Concerned with past and present political realities, her imagery projects the perception of oneself in relation to natural and manmade topographies and investigates broader personal and social narratives. Hofshi was the keynote speaker in the International Printmaking Conference in 2017.
