Vadehra Art Gallery is pleased to announce its returning participation in the upcoming edition of Art Basel 2026, with a solo presentation by the prominent Indian artist and scholar Gulammohammed Sheikh. Titled Of Cities and Tongas, our presentation comprises of works from the 1960s, a seminal period in the artist's six-decade-long oeuvre.

ABOUT ARTISTS : Gulammohammed Sheikh

Born in Gujarat in 1937, Gulammohammed Sheikh is one of India's most celebrated post-modernists. Rooted in cultural histories, mythology and contemporary realities, his work weaves together the personal and political, past and present. Before developing the layered narrative style for which he is best known, Sheikh explored emotionally charged landscapes and abstractions featuring horses, trees and urban imagery. This selection of collages, paintings and drawings reflects Sheikh's early engagement with modernism and internationalism, while marking a shift from heavily textured surfaces to smoother planes and bold contrasts of colour. Revisiting themes of cities and tongas, these works reveal the beginnings of the 'cityscape' imagery that would continue to shape his practice for decades. A selection of works from this presentation were exhibited at Gulammohammed Sheikh's retrospective titled Of Worlds Within Worlds at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (2025) and Durbar Hall Art Gallery, Kochi (2025–26) as part of the 6th edition of the Kochi–Muziris Biennale.
