Perrotin returns to Frieze New York with a solo presentation by New York-based artist Genesis Belanger, in anticipation of her first major public exhibition, with Public Art Fund on June 2 in City Hall Park. Additionally, the gallery will present a selection of work by artists from the roster with upcoming projects around the world.
ABOUT ARTISTS : Genesis Belanger,Alma Allen,Jean-Marie Appriou,Daniel Arsham,Bernard Frize,Laurent Grasso,Todd Gray,Hans Hartung,Thilo Heinzmann,Leslie Hewitt,Gregor Hildebrandt,JR,Gabriel de la Mora,Jean-Michel Othoniel,Paul Pfeiffer,Josh Sperling,Pieter Vermeersch,Emma Webster
For Frieze, Genesis Belanger stages a scene that evokes a prevalent sense of nostalgia for a time before technological overload, when connection to nature felt more attainable. With the fruit tree Eclipse, and the newest additions to her floral mosaic series, Belanger draws her influence from a broad selection of decorative depictions of nature—from medieval tapestries, to Botticelli, modern textile design, and Henri Rousseau—exploring the human impulse to reduce and commodify the natural world. Building on these tensions, she brings together practices of the past with predictions of the future: Dreams of the Luddite, a cheeky tableau centered on a flip phone, gestures toward simpler times, while the uninhabited shirt in Reduction in Force reflects the unnerving displacement of human labor by artificial intelligence. Overlooking the presentation, an analog clock frozen in time, titled Darkest Hour(s), captures the feeling of time suspended in a moment of uncertain future. In her upcoming Public Art Fund installation, Belanger will transform City Hall Park into a stage for artworks that play with commonplace park features such as planted gardens, fountains, and public statuary. The visitor will find a flock of birds, a wheelbarrow sprouting oversized flowers, three potted fruit trees waiting to be planted among their living counterparts, and two large bronze figures that are modern interpretations of the allegorical Lady Justice. Belanger chose the exhibition’s title Heads or Tails to suggest a moment of anticipation – reflective of a societal moment on the precipice of great change. Through these four sculptural vignettes, the artist invites viewers to reflect on questions raised in our contemporary moment, such as humanity’s connection to nature, our ability to discern real from fake, and the representation of civic values in our public spaces.
