Today is the collectors' preview at TEFAF New York, and you can imagine how excited we are. We have been part of the fair since its very beginning, and every year we are amazed anew by how many collectors come here from all corners of the world. Last year, we were able to sell works by Valdés and Giacometti to Guatemala and Brazil — countries that are difficult for us to reach from Europe. But in Manhattan, everyone comes together. First, because the selection at the comparatively intimate Park Avenue Armory is among the very best anywhere, when the "crème de la crème" of the international art trade gathers there. And second, because Manhattan remains the center of the art world. Three leading art fairs, international auctions where, within a single week and among many outstanding works, no fewer than five paintings by Mark Rothko are offered for sale, along with numerous museums and important galleries — all of this makes every trip here worthwhile. Perhaps you might be one of those making a last-minute decision? In any case, we will be happy to have fair tickets waiting for you! Take care — as New Yorkers say. Yours, Ute Eggeling and Michael Beck

Yayoi Kusama placeholder icon
abstract: Over the course of her distinguished career, Yayoi Kusama has developed a practice, which, though it shares affiliations with Surrealism, Minimalism, Pop art, Eccentric Abstraction, the Zero and Nul movements, resists any singular classification. Born in Matsumoto City, Japan in 1929, she studied painting in Kyoto before moving to New York in the late 1950s, and by the mid-1960s had become well known in the avant-garde world for her provocative happenings and exhibitions. Since this time, Kusama's extraordinary artistic endeavours have spanned painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, performance, film, printmaking, installation and environmental art as well as literature, fashion (most notably in her 2012 collaboration with Louis Vuitton) and product design. An enduring feature of Kusama’s unique art is the intricate lattice of paint that covers the surface of her Infinity Net canvases, the negative spaces between the individual loops of these all-over patterns emerging as delicate polka dots. These motifs have their roots in hallucinations from which she has suffered since childhood, in which the world appears to her to be covered with proliferating forms. Forging a path between abstract expressionism and minimalism, Kusama first showed her white Infinity Nets in New York in the late 1950s to critical acclaim.

Piero Manzoni placeholder icon
abstract: Piero Manzoni’s brief career was one of the most radically inventive of the twentieth century, producing a body of work that continues to challenge the definitions of artistic sovereignty and virtuosity. Piero Manzoni was born in 1933 in Soncino, Italy, and died in 1963 in Milan, Italy. His work has been the subject of numerous international exhibitions, including Herning Kunstmuseum, Germany (1991); Musée d'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (1991); Castello di Rivoli—Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Italy (1992); “Linee,” Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome (1995); “Line Drawings,” Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1995); “Milano et mitologia,” Palazzo Reale, Milan (1997); MADRE Museum, Italy (2008); “When Bodies Became Art,” Stadel Museum, Germany (2013); Palazzo Reale, Italy (2014); and Museu de Arte Moderna, Brazil (2015).

Günther Uecker placeholder icon
abstract: A central figure of Düsseldorf’s postwar Group Zero, Günther Uecker has for seven decades developed his reliefs comprising dynamic arrangements of nails. Born in 1930 in Wendorf, Germany, Uecker studied at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee and Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, where he lives and works today. In the 1950s, influenced by Eastern philosophy and Gregorian chanting, he began a ritual of hammering nails. These materials signify protection and creation to the artist, who remembers nailing planks over the windows of his home to deter Soviet troops after the Second World War. By 1957, he was hammering nails onto canvas to achieve a “sundial” optical effect, casting light and shadow in ephemeral patterns. Soon, he integrated lightboxes, rotating discs, television sets, and chairs (Stuhl, 1963) into his nail sculptures. In 1961, Uecker joined Heinz Mack and Otto Piene in the anti-expressionist movement Group Zero, which prioritized expanding beyond the traditional dimensions of the canvas into kinetic, serial, and participatory realms. After the group’s dissolution in 1966, Uecker’s work incorporated aspects of conceptual and land art, and he began designing stage sets for operas. Among his public works are From Darkness to Light at the United Nations, Geneva (1978) and a Reflection and Prayer Room for the Reichstag, Berlin (1998–99). In 2020, he embarked on his series Lichtbogen, paintings of radiant blue-and-white arcs—and in 2022, his most recent series of nail relief
