The most recent Stable Inhabitant of a Changing World…

Cheryl Ekstrom, Frits Henningsen Chair (1935) 2012, life size, 316 L stainless steel, edition 5

Cheryl Ekstrom (b. 1943) often uses tradition to break with tradition, as did Frits Henningsen with his design for a colonial wingback chair. Henningsen's “form follows function” interpretation made his design a modern classic. By taking Henningsen’s functional form and casting it as a sculpture, Ekstrom elevates the everyday object to a work of art in this most recent addition to her Stable Inhabitants of a Changing World series.

Before embarking on the Stable Inhabitants of a Changing World series, Ekstrom was keen to identify the connections between design, art and architecture. Her chairs are an intersection of these disciplines. Prior to the current Faux Real show at the Laguna Art Museum, a collection of her chairs was included in a 2006 exhibition at the Museum of Design, Art and Architecture, Culver City, California. From there they traveled to the Museum Villa Haiss, Germany.

Frits Henningsen (b. circa 1900) was a seminal contributor to the iconic Danish modern style. He was an active member of the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild. Henningsen's personal style was inspired by such varied aesthetics as Rococo, British 17th-century and French Empire Period furniture. The original Henningsen wingback chair was created in 1935 in leather and beech wood.
